Attention White County: This is to advise that a stray cat in the area of downtown Helen was recently tested and found to be positive for rabies. The stray cat, which appeared to be sick, was picked up and taken home by out-of-county visitors on February 20, 2026. In an attempt to help the cat, the individual was bitten on Saturday February 21, 2026. The cat was taken to a vet on Sunday February 22, 2026 for diagnosis where the Veterinarian put the cat down for neurological issues. The cat was shipped to the Georgia Public Health Lab, Virology Section, in Decatur. The White County Environmental Health Department was advised Thursday February 26, 2026, that the cat tested positive for rabies. This is the first confirmed case of rabies in White County in 2026.Positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid cat was picked up.
